The Opposition United National Congress is scheduled to meet with senior officials of the Elections and Boundaries Commission today.
Almost two weeks after UNC general secretary Peter Kanhai sent a formal request to EBC chairman Mark Ramkerrysingh, the party will get its wish as a delegation from the commission will meet to discuss several issues the party described as matters of national importance.
These issues include the EBC’s 2024 general elections boundaries report; pending local government by-elections; issues relating to special voting; EBC staffing qualification and training for election day; house-to-house survey and voter regularisation and registration; registration of Caricom nationals, Commonwealth nationals and non-Commonwealth national; and additions and deletions to the electoral list.
Last month, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar denied claims that the UNC was not holding the Government accountable over its failure to lay the 2024 EBC report in Parliament. The UNC had claimed the Government was in breach of the Constitution, as the report was due in March.
Although Persad-Bissessar is not expected to be present at today’s meeting, UNC chairman and Oropouche West MP Davendranath Tancoo, Kanhai, Barataria/San Juan MP Saddam Hosein, St Augustine MP Khadijah Ameen, Senator Wade Mark, as well as Feroze Khan, Dr Tim Gopeesingh, Vijay Gosyne and attorney Darrell Allahar, are all scheduled to speak with EBC officials.
