Buccoo gets $5m community centre
Buccoo Village, the home of the internationally famous goat racing which got a $112 million integrated facility three weeks ago, now has a new $5 million community centre. The centre is the first of four which would be commissioned in the current fiscal year, according to Community Development and Culture Secretary Tracy Davidson-Celestine at the official opening of the centre on Monday. Chief Secretary Orville London remarked at the ceremony that “what Buccoo got is what Buccoo worked hard for. Buccoo deserves what they got and they deserve the quality of what they got.” He added: “I want anyone to defy me that where you would find within a half-mile radius in the country you have a primary school, a recreation ground, a hard court, a community centre, a pan theatre and the most magnificent integrated facility.”
Davidson-Celestine lamented that one of the issues which continued to plague her division was the management of community centres. “There have been a significant number of complaints of the misuse and abuse of community facilities She said: “We must at all times try to ensure there is an all inclusive approach to our management and I must emphasise that there is an element of self-sufficiency in their community service and those of the community of Buccoo have demonstrated time-and-time again that you deploy your resources to secure financial gain.” The centre houses a computer room, culinary arts centre, an audio visual room, conferencing facilities for 120 people and a performance hall.
