Gopeesingh assures no job losses at MTS
Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh says there will be no job losses at the National Maintenance and Training Services (MTS.) He gave the assurance on Monday in response to threats of nationwide protest action from the Estate Police Association. The minister was responding to questions from reporters after the distribution of 500 Housing Development Corporation (HDC) homes at the National Academy for Performing Arts South Campus, San Fernando. Two weeks ago, Gopeesingh expressed dissatisfaction with the level of performance of MTS personnel contracted to provide security at the nation’s schools.
He assured that the issue of job losses does not arise since the matter is “not set in stone.” He said a note would be taken to Cabinet on MTS and its effectiveness. The minister said there were reports that he was removing MTS from providing school security. “That is furthest from the truth. There is no issue of moving MTS. It is a matter of rationalisation of the security services within the schools because, there are a lot of disfunctionalities related to it.”
The minister stopped short of elaborating. He said he was taking the facts, figures, weakness and inefficiencies related to MTS for consideration by Cabinet. The “whole matter of the MTS is going to be discussed at the Cabinet level when I put forward the facts and the information for Cabinet’s consideration. “I am gathering the full facts of it,” he stated.
