Christopher Jennings rode away with the featured 36-lap open event at the Beacon Cycling on the Avenue in Woodbrook on Wednesday night. The South African held off his Rapha Condor teammates Michael Cummings and Kristian House.

In what was the last event of the night, local rider Verum Maharaj led for the first lap while Jamaican Marloe Rodman was ahead after the second. Jason Perryman then came to the front, but with much riding left the leaders were still buried in the leading bunch. The riders started in front of Mike’s Bike Shop on Ariapita Avenue, turned onto De Verteuil Street and then to Blackman Drive, before returning to the Avenue. Jennings and his Rapha Condor team took the lead with less than four laps left and stormed well ahead, eliminating several top riders, including T&T’s Olympic fourth place match sprinter Njisane Phillip.

Spectators lined the route as they enjoyed the cool conditions. Among those in attendance was Works Minister Emmanuel George.

Jennings praised his team after the effort. “All of us rode quite well. The first lap was really fast. I could not keep up with the sprinters. My form was quite good after the Tour of Tobago.”

Jennings won $5,000 for his win and over $4,000 for lap victories.

Alexander Gibbons was the top local rider, finishing eighth.
