MATT condemns threats against TV6 reporter
The Media Association of T&T has condemned reports that the life of a senior journalist has been allegedly threatened and is calling for a speedy investigation into the matter.
In a statement issued to the media, the association said it viewed with "great concern alleged threats on the life of CCN’s senior investigative reporter Mark Bassant."
Bassant reported that he had received information that a hit had been placed on his head on May 9 and had reported the matter to his employers, who have provided him with 24-hour security.
MATT said it wished to remind the country that a free and fair press and one that is free from fear is crucial to the functioning of a democracy and all institutions and right-thinking members of the society should also condemn any threat or attack on members of the media. These threats could result in a journalist operating under fear, which weakens the role of the fourth estate as a watchdog, its statement said.
MATT hopes the police will investigate this matter with the urgency and diligence required and if proven true, bring to heel those who would seek to harm or injure journalists for performing their duties, it added.
