Letters

The effects of the statements attributed to the members of the Joint Select Committee will be felt in the pockets of most of us in the country. When people in authority make uninformed pronouncements on such important matters, they create perceptions that are not always fair and true.

I had just finished reading John Grisham’s The Confession when the phone rang at my home in Nassau, Bahamas. The voice at the other end simply said, “Our dear friend just passed away.” Immediately, I knew it was Sir Ellis, as he was so fondly known by his friends.

The recent fire in that gutted a fine old building and the excuses for not bringing the fire under control leaves a lot to be desired. We have heard that hoses were leaking, there was low water pressure and no water at all in the hydrant.

Now that the smoke has cleared, I think it’s an appropriate time for Minister of National Security John Sandy to put out a clear statement on the purchase and use of fireworks. For too long we have hear the problems with the elderly and animals and the inconsiderate use of fireworks.

This is in response to Minister of Tourism Rupert Griffith summoning of Tobago’s tourism officials and stakeholders for a meeting in his office to discuss Tobago’s lack of tourism. Tobago’s tourism officials have demonstrated nothing but gross incompetence for too long.
