BRIDGETOWN–Barbados' dominance in Caribbean volleyball continued to slip, when both titles in the final round of the Sizzlin' Sands Beach Volleyball competition ended up in other hands. Mark Lewis and Danny Wilson of Jamaica won the men's title, and the Trinidad & Tobago pair of Nancy Joseph and Elki Philip won the women's title in the third leg of the competition hosted at Brandons Beach here.
For Lewis and Wilson, their victory followed a second-place finish in the final leg of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit in Nicaragua. The Jamaicans defeated the Barbadian pair of Elwyn Oxley and Gregory Gill 21-15, 17-21, 15-6 in a thrilling contest. As a result, they have already qualified for the Central American & Caribbean Games, as well as the next Pan Am Games.
After finishing runners-up in the previous two years, Joseph and Philip, the three-time T&T national champion, overcame compatriots Nadiege Honore and Ayanna Dyette in straight sets, 21-16, 21-18.
It turned out to be a complete T&T sweep for the medals as Andrea Davis and national indoor captain Kelly Billingy prevailed over Barbadians Sharon Bovell and Mona Crawford in the bronze medal match. (CMC)
