The 70s started off with the "Black Power Revolution" (or was it a mutiny?), some of which was documented in calypso like, Mighty Duke's Memories if 1970. The later years of that decade however saw, highlighted in a number of popular calypsoes, the glory that was brought to Trinidad and Tobago by Hasely Crawford in 1976 and Janelle Penny Commissiong in 1977. These were two of the greatest moments in Trinidad and Tobago's history that attracted widespread global attention. Crawford was the first, and still the only Trinidad & Tobago athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in the 100m at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada, while Commissiong became the first "black" winner of the Miss Universe beauty pageant in Santo Domingo in 1977.
Crawford's achievements were heralded in The Mighty Sparrow's calypso Crawford:
Nineteen seventy six Olympic crowd/
Saw how Hasely made Trinidad proud/
His place will be on top the rest/
By test he's the best/
Montreal Olympics ah wouldn't lie/
First time ah see ah human being fly/
All over the world the people know/
Trinidad and Tobago sports hero.
Then in Maestro's GOLD:
Crawfie we Crawfie/
They say they never see that yet/
Start to finish/ Moving like ah jet/
Lane one...Montreal/
Gold medal/
Gold Gold/
The fastest human in the whole wide world.
For the Carnival season of 1978 Lord Kitchener had a proud nation singing and dancing to Miss Universe when he paid tribute to Commissiong for the glory that she brought to T&T in July of 1977:
It was twelve o'clock the hour a night in July/
When a TTT announcer brought tears to mih eye/
...You ought to know it first/ O
ur Penny is the queen of the universe/
Penny lovely Penny/
Girl you really make it look easy/
...This year seventy eight/
Well we going to celebrate/
Doctor Williams and the president will participate.
Not to be outdone but in not as popular a calypso, The Mighty Sparrow did his tribute in calypso to Commissiong entitled "First Black Miss Universe":
Trinidad and Tobago went to Santo Domingo/
Flash ah smile and steal the show/
Penny...Penny/
She'll go down in history for coming first/
Penny...Penny/
And for me is the one and only black Miss Universe.
