Hurdler Jehue Gordon began his quest for four gold medals at the 2010 Ministries of Sports & Education sponsored National Secondary School Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo yesterday. Gordon of Queen's Royal College (QRC) romped home in the boys under 20 110m hurdles finals when he pulled away from the field to stopped the clock at 13.5 seconds (hand time).
He was chased by Shane Miguel (Carapichaima East Sec) and Atiba Wright (Harmon SDA) both of whom finished in that order respectively. Gordon later qualified for the 400m finals by winning heat-one of the semifinals in 49.90s. The finals were scheduled for late yesterday afternoon. Gordon, a fourth place finisher at last year's World Championships in the 400m hurdles, will be seeking to repeat his four medal haul as he did last year when he won the 110m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, 400m and the 4 x 400m relay.
Like Gordon, Gabriella Cumberbatch of St Joseph Convent Port Of Spain started her drive to capture four titles of her own when she won the Girls 20 100m hurdles finals. She beat Amica Orr of Speyside High and Denica Jones of BonAir High. Cumberbatch contested the finals of the 100m sprint after she qualified by winning her heat. The 100m finals were contested late last evening. Cumberbatch was also a part of St George 4 x 100m relay team.
Gordon and Cumberbatch are leading in the battle for the Port of Spain and Environs District 2010 Zonal title which has been won by Tobago for the last 16 years. 1992 was the last time Tobago lost the overall title.
The finals contested yesterday were 100m, 400m, 1500m and 4 x 100m relay. Today will see action in the 200m, 800m, 300m and 400m hurdles and the 4 x 400m events.
