?The grandson of a prominent attorney is among several people arrested by police during an exercise in the Santa Cruz community on Friday. The exercise began around 8 am and ended shortly after 6 pm. It involved a team of officers from Santa Cruz CID and Robbery Squad and HPT officers of Morvant Police Station, led by Sgt Maharaj. The attorney's grandson, police said, was charged with resisting arrest and obscene language at La Pastora Village. Officers said they were about to arrest another man when the 18-year-old suspect began to verbally abuse the lawmen. He is alleged to have used obscene language. As officers attempted to arrest the suspect, they were forced to shoot a pit bull which attacked the lawmen.
Shortly afterwards, police stopped and searched two men who were seen emerging from a forested area, and allegedly found a home-made shotgun and two live rounds of ammunition in a knapsack the men were carrying. At La Canoa, a man was held allegedly with 120 packets of marijuana (ten piece). Three other men were held in the Santa Cruz area for marijuana possession.
Police held a 19-year-old man who was driving an AD van with false number plates at Sam Boucaud. The chassis and engine numbers of the vehicle were filed off and the suspect did not have a driver's permit, officers said. A 32-year-old deportee was detained for housebreaking, while a Cantaro resident, who allegedly robbed a Piarco man of a $6,000 gold chain, was arrested and the item recovered. The exercise was spearheaded by Sr Supt Theophilus Cumming, Supt Stephen Ramsubhag and acting ASP Kenrick Edwards. (AS)
