An official at the Elections and Boundaries Commission says recounts have been requested at Arima, Diego Martin North East and Point Fortin. She also said the official results would be released before Friday. It Arima, the PNM's Laurel Lezama-Lee Sing lost to Roger Samuel. COP is requesting a recount in Diego Martin North East, where Garvin Nicholas lost to former Minister of Works Colm Imbert. UNC's Nyahuma Obika is requesting a recount, having lost to PNM's Paula Gopee-Scoon. The EBC official said: "The EBC will have to give them the opportunity if they want a recount. They may want a couple of boxes or a general recount. But it should be ready before Friday."
Meanwhile, she said while the recount was on, it would not prevent the President George Maxwell Richards from appointing the first female Prime Minister of T&T Kamla Persad-Bissessar. She will also be able to appoint her Cabinet. The official results were made available to Richards by 3 pm yesterday. Kamla Persad-Bissessar created history as she is expected to be sworn in today as T&T's first female Prime Minister. The UNC-led coalition won a landslide victory–29 seats to the PNM's 12. Efforts to contact Lezama-Lee Sing proved futile.
