National Under-15 Girls champion Catherine Spicer and Barbados top seed Kevin Farley claimed the women and men's Tobago Open table tennis titles over the weekend. Spicer, who eased to the U-15 and U-18 girls titles, added her third and the biggest of them, with a 3-0 win over Ambika Sitram, 11-3, 11-2, 11-6.
Spicer created an upset over favourite Astra Edwards to win their semifinal match-up 3-2. Catherine took the first set at 11-5. However, Edwards turned the tables in the second set to win at 5-11. The Under-15 champion then rebounded to take the third 11-3, before Edwards sent the match to the final set, taking the fourth 8-11. However, Spicer, dug deep to win the fifth 11-6, to take the match and the title.
On the men's side Farley defeated T&T's Curtis Humphrey 3-1 in the final, to take the crown. The Barbadian took a very competitive opening set 11-9, before he eased to the second 11-5. Humphrey then rebounded to take the third 3-11, before Farley claimed the fourth in the same fashion as the first set, to take the match and the title.
The Bajan defeated Terry Corbin (3-0) 11-6, 11-8, 11-6, while Humphrey defeated Kyle Borneo (3-1) 11-3, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6 in semifinal action.
