St Vincent and the Grenadines failed to overcome Barbados and lost the opportunity to top Group B by the slightest of margins after a three-way split for the top spot brought the all important CFU/Concacaf tie breaker rule into play for the first time in the Digicel Caribbean Cup history.
In what was a tight goalless game at Victoria Park that controversially ended with both sides being reduced to nine men each, St Vincent lived to fight again as they qualify to the next round of the Caribbean's biggest football tournament.
Because of the nil-all draw, Barbados would be going home and out of this year's tournament. Despite the fact that none of the big three of St Vincent, Barbados, or St Kitts could beat each other, it was down to the CFU/ Concacaf tie-breaker regulations to determine qualification.
The three teams were level on total points, level on points on the games against each other, level on goal difference in games played against each other, but finally differentiated on the fourth circumstance where St Kitts scored more than the other two in the games between each tied team.
St Vincent then came second in the Group by the fifth level of tie breaker when they scored more goals in the competition in its entirety.Knowing Cayman finished second in Group A on four points, it is guaranteed that St Vincent qualify as one of the top two sides from Groups A, B or C.
St Kitts and Nevis beat Montserrat 4-0 led by a pair of goals from Alexis Saddler to top Group B of the Second Round Digicel Caribbean Cup qualifiers at Victoria Park.Saddler netted in the 17th and 31st minutes while Keith Gumbs (20th) and Ian Lake (90th) also scored for St Kitts/Nevis to end with five points, the same as host St Vincent and The Grenadines and Barbados which drew 0-0 in the second match.
Group C qualifying action begins tomorrow until Sunday with Guyana, Suriname, Netherlands Antilles and St Lucia competing in Suriname while the other first round group D, involving host Dominican Republic, British Virgin Islands and Domica also kicks off tomorrow in Santo Domingo.
