The date for the opening of the School for the Blind at Paxvale, Santa Cruz, remained undecided up to late yesterday.
Even though the new school term opened on Monday, the School for the Blind remains closed.
The school was closed last year September to undergo repairs, displacing around 18 blind and visually impaired children.
In a telephone interview yesterday, executive officer of the Blind Welfare Association Kenneth Surratt said he met with officials of the Ministry of Education and the school still required a certificate from the Fire Service.
"They keep on passing the buck and the school will never open. Many of our parents tried to enroll their child into the regular school system. The principal of these schools said they would only accept children who are blind in their school once the Ministry of Education provides the visually impaired student with a student aid," he said.
Surratt said the regular schools could not accept children who were blind because the Ministry of Education did not provide the student's aid.
"How do we expect our children who are blind to get an education? I am calling on the minister of education (Tim Gopeesingh) to use his good office and do what is necessary to ensure that the school is open," he said.
He said the school's continued closure denied blind students the opportunity for an education.
When contacted, officials at the Education Facilities Company Limited (EFCL) which repaired the school did not want to comment.
Officials at the Ministry of Education said they were not responsible for the school and when they notified EFCL there remained only one tender for the school, for a fire alarm.
