Although police officers investigating the July 24 prison break were initially given a one-week deadline to present their findings into the circumstances that led to the daring escape which left one of their colleagues dead, senior officers yesterday confirmed that they were nowhere near completion of the probe.
Unable to say exactly how long again the investigation would go on, officials reiterated that that information would only be known to the lead investigator, Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime) Glen Hackett.
When contacted yesterday, however, Hackett indicated that he was in a meeting and unable to speak further.
The extension of time comes one day after acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams revealed that more investigators had been assigned to the case.
During an interview on Sunday, Williams said the investigation was continuing but that additional personnel had been added in a bid to ensure it was concluded within the shortest period of time.
"The prison break investigation is on. The Deputy Commissioner in charge of crime, Glen Hackett, has recently added investigators to the team so that the investigation can be speeded up, so we can bring closure to that investigation within the shortest period of time," Williams had said.
It was reported over the weekend that seven prison officers, including a senior, were facing suspension and charges in relation to the jailbreak. However, up to yesterday no such action had yet been initiated.
The jailbreak by prisoners Allan "Scanny" Martin, Hassan Atwell and Christopher "Monster" Selby was perpetuated as they shot their way out of the Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain prison on June 24.
PC Sherman Maynard was killed during their escape. He was shot while seated in the front passenger seat of a police vehicle. He and two of his colleagues were conducting sentry duty outside the prison at the time.
Soon after their bid for freedom, Martin was killed by police in a guard booth at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, while Atwell was shot dead in east Port-of-Spain the following day, allegedly by rival gang members. Selby surrendered to police last Sunday.
