Over the next week many will have less work-related issues to consider and perhaps time to ponder on the future of our nation and that of our families. A good starting point is to understand that there are some things in life that are absolute and for which there are no compromises like the ever present law of gravity. As such regardless of one's political preference, race, religion or class, the world economic realities will not be compromised because a new government is elected.
Economic fundamentals are uncompromising. There is a story in the Bible in the book of Matthew 25, verses 14 to 30 that says that investment is critical to survival and those who fail to invest will have their savings taken away. That reality is uncompromising regardless of whether one believes in the bible or not.
While the last administration can boast of spending and programmes, one is challenged to find viable investment initiatives at a time when there was plenty.
As we ponder on the way forward it is important to note that many are calling for the prime minister to address the nation about the Government's plan for the economy.
If I were to advise the prime minister I would say that as much as it may be politically appropriate, there should be no rush to address the nation with specifics at this time. There simply has not been enough time in office to make realistic pronouncements that are sound and reliable.
It may be enough to say in vague politically appropriate words that the Government has many challenges and is working with the best technical minds available to restructure the economy therefore there should be no need to panic.
In underscoring the point, it may be necessary to note that a major responsibility of any government is to place technocrats of impeccable character and proper qualification to manage the nation's affairs. An example of this was the Central Bank and Government's ability to safeguard the nation's savings during the global financial crisis of 2007-8.
Many will ponder the dismissal of the Central bank governor as well. As we ponder on these many things, please keep in mind that this government is less than six months in office and it is unlikely that there can be answers to the many questions about our future until there is appropriate time to understand the economic realities and challenges we face.
I wish all of T&T a happy and holy Christmas and may God bless our nation.
