We all love and care deeply for our pets. No matter the type or size, we love our animals. The most common household pet in our land is the dog. There is a wide variety of dogs seen in our yards, public parks and streets. The elevation of the popularity of dogs in T&T was due to the post emancipation influx of indentured Indian and Chinese labourers. The dog is a sacred entity in Hinduism and it is believed that these magnificent creatures guard the doors of heaven and hell.
The dog was the first domesticated animal in China and in the Chinese Zodiac it represents loyalty, respect, faithfulness and sincerity.Sadly in T&T the love for dogs is dwindling since there have been so many attacks and instances of mauling to death of innocent citizens. I am of the firm belief that the animal should not be held liable but the owner.
Most of the attacks that have occurred recently were due to lack of care by the owner in ensuring the dogs were kept securely. Also, some people cannot afford to pay for proper dog training and instead beat their pets mercilessly to inflict fear which would lead to temporary obligation. My uncle trains dogs professionally and I've never seen him beat a dog continuously to get it to listen. This wanton ill treatment only facilitates a demonic disposition.
This is why I am in support of the Dog Control Bill as it will ensure the dog is registered, trained and securely housed. If dogs are treated like man's best friend they will be loyal, if you treat them like the enemy they will turn on you.
