Food Production Minister Devant Maharaj says his ministry is looking into the way last month's Agricultural Society of T&T elections were contested. He said he was also aware that a group of farmers planned to file a judicial review challenging the results. He said so to the media after the launch of the Aquaponics Programme at Harpe Place, Observatory Street, Port-of-Spain, on Wednesday.Maharaj added: "It is engaging the ministry's attention. We had three independent reports and one was from the person nominated by the Elections and Boundaries Commission. The report said the election was not transparent, fair and undemocratic.
"I have a report from ministry's senior legal adviser who echoed the same sentiment and a report from Gainel Seenath, who is a secretary of the association."The contentious elections were eventually won by Nawaz Karim and his slate. However, Maharaj said, he was told by a group of farmers who was unhappy with the way the elections were run that it planned to file for judicial review this week.On a separate issue, Maharaj said he also made a complaint concerning threatening texts to him by a newspaper columnist. The falling-out between Maharaj and the columnist, he claimed, came after he refused to buy a book for his ministry.
