Speak­ing at the awards cer­e­mo­ny held by the As­so­ci­a­tion of Fe­male Ex­ec­u­tives (AFETT) a week ago, ju­nior min­is­ter in the Min­istry of Gen­der, Youth and Child De­vel­op­ment Razia Ahmed of­fered a star­tling 2011 sta­tis­tic.A dis­pro­por­tion­ate num­ber of chil­dren–34,152–be­low the age of 14 are to be found in the same San Juan/Laven­tille area in which 40 per cent of sin­gle-moth­er house­holds are al­so found.

By com­par­i­son, in Port-of-Spain, where 45 per cent of house­holds are head­ed by women, there are 6,500 chil­dren un­der the age of 14.While such read­ings of sta­tis­tics are some­times cor­re­la­tions that smash two truths to­geth­er in search of a larg­er truth, the ev­i­dence of ob­ser­va­tion and crime sta­tis­tics sug­gests that the min­is­ter might be on to some­thing very im­por­tant in her de­scrip­tion of the sit­u­a­tion.

The Gen­der Min­istry, the Min­istry of the Peo­ple and the Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Min­istry are like­ly to have oth­er in­for­ma­tion that ties the two sta­tis­tics to­geth­er even more firm­ly.Was the min­is­ter throw­ing down a chal­lenge to the women of AFETT?
