Speaking at the awards ceremony held by the Association of Female Executives (AFETT) a week ago, junior minister in the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development Razia Ahmed offered a startling 2011 statistic.A disproportionate number of children–34,152–below the age of 14 are to be found in the same San Juan/Laventille area in which 40 per cent of single-mother households are also found.
By comparison, in Port-of-Spain, where 45 per cent of households are headed by women, there are 6,500 children under the age of 14.While such readings of statistics are sometimes correlations that smash two truths together in search of a larger truth, the evidence of observation and crime statistics suggests that the minister might be on to something very important in her description of the situation.
The Gender Ministry, the Ministry of the People and the National Security Ministry are likely to have other information that ties the two statistics together even more firmly. Was the minister throwing down a challenge to the women of AFETT?
