There is a young man in Bangladesh who is unique because he did not only follow his grandfather into international cricket but he followed him to a tee in playing for two countries.
His name is Logan van Beek and he has followed in the illustrious footsteps of his deceased grandfather Simpson Guillen who played international cricket both for the West Indies and New Zealand.
Young van Beek played for the New Zealand under-19 cricket team at the 2010 World Cup in New Zealand and these days he is turning out for Holland in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World T20 tournament in Bangladesh. He has qualified to play for the Netherlands because his father has oots in that country.
Logan van Beek is an allrounder in more ways than one. As a cricketer, he compares his play to that of Shane Watson, he also represented New Zealand at the World Under-19 Basketball Championships in 2009, and he works as a sports coach.
Simpson Guillen passed on at the age of 87, after living in New Zealand since 1952. Simpson was the great uncle of left handed batsman Justin Guillen who has played for T&T at the senior level and also the West Indies 'A' team. In 2010, T&T Guardian did an interview with Logan in New Zealand and asked him if there is any chance of him following in his grandfather's footsteps and playing for the West Indies? He said:
"I will try to make it big here and get into the senior team and hopefully follow in my grandfather's footsteps and play Test cricket. However, if I can't make it here, who knows, it is definitely an option, maybe I can be the next Brendan Nash."
He added that his grandfather has been integral to his development as a cricketer and he is always around to assist.
The right handed van Beek also played basketball for New Zealand.
"It's tough to choose between cricket and basketball. I kind of like cricket at the moment and will be giving it my best shot to see how far I can progress."
His grandfather at the time thought that he should go the way of cricket - as he thought that basketball is for girls.
Logan has been doing his thing for Holland during this tournament and one man who would not have missed a match was his grandfather, who used to accompany him to all his matches. He continues in the great tradition of the Guillens and cricket.
