Every citizen should be deeply concerned about what happened outside Parliament on March 28 because it was an example of a disturbing political trend that is contributing to a rapid decline in our values. The Leader of the Opposition, Keith Rowley, had asked his supporters to gather outside Parliament to show solidarity with the People's National Movement (PNM) on a day that Rowley went to the legislature to demand that the Government stop the Beetham Waste Water project.
There was no mass support, but the behaviour of the PNM faithful who heeded their leader's call amounted to what can best be described as a shameful display of hooliganism and intimidation directed at government ministers Anil Roberts and Lincoln Douglas.
The CNC3 television footage was graphic enough. The PNM has refused to acknowledge the incident happened and has asked the Speaker to provide video surveillance tapes so that the party can "view and establish what actually transpired outside the precincts of the Parliament."
If they were sincere and paying attention, there would be no need for that since it was clear that people in red were less than cordial to the ministers. But instead of accepting that something was wrong, Rowley seemed to be suggesting that Anil was at fault.
