T&T's Aaron Wilson made a mockery of his world No 270 ranking when he give a scintillating display over the Easter weekend in Cuba by storming into the Caribbean Junior Table-Tennis Championship singles final.
His victory against the defending Caribbean Junior champion Isaac Villa of Dominican Republic, ranked No 163 is testimony that he is one for the future of T&T table tennis.
Aaron's silver medal in the competitive Cuban arena, where Cuba swept all before them, will undoubtedly improve his ranking. However the 11/5, 10/12, 7/11, 12/10, 11/9, 11/3 victory over Isaac Villa would long be remembered for the high standard of table tennis displayed by both players.
Even more significant is that Wilson will have three cracks at the Under-18 Caribbean crown which has become very competitive with the inclusion of Cuba and the Latin Americans.
He did not go all the way this time bowing 8-11,6-11, 6-11, 9-11 to Cuban, Pino Martinez ranked No 126 in the world.
Last year the Caribbean Junior Singles was held in T&T and Wilson managed bronze in the Cadet division but this year he was able to turn bronze to silver and was instrumental together with Shaquille Mitchell and Korren Welch in T&T winning a bronze in the Boys U-18 team competition.
He then teamed up with Brittney Joseph to cop his second bronze in the mixed doubles of the eight-nation tournament where Cuba swept all before them.
It is noteworthy that the U-15 Cadet boys team of Benoni Daniel, Jakeem Welch and Joshua Maxwell, the U-15 Cadet girls team of Nalini Boodoo, Jasheer DeGannes, Danielle Dick and Shanika Johnson and the U-18 junior girls team of Brittney Joseph, Monique Cooper and Gyshan Latchman, all won bronze team medals.
Wilson was spotted in 2011 and was T&T's pioneer in the International Hopes Programme with the future in mind WFIM 2011.
