A police corporal with 15 years service who allegedly took a bribe to forego a charge of marijuana possession has been granted $100,000 bail.Cpl Showell Dickerson who was last attached to the Point Fortin Police Station appeared before Port-of-Spain First Court magistrate Christine Charles on two charges arising from the alleged incident.
Dickerson, 34, was arrested last Thursday at Reservoir Road, Point Fortin, by officers of the Professional Standards Bureau, including Insp Walker, Sgt Seepersad, Cpl Joefield and PC Marcano.It is alleged that he went to a house in Point Fortin on April 29 where he found a quantity of marijuana in the postbox.It is alleged that Dickerson asked for $2,000 to forgo charges. It is alleged he received $1,000.
He was charged by PC Marcano with corruptly soliciting and receiving a bribe. He was granted $100,000 bail by a Justice of the Peace at the San Fernando Police Station on Tuesday night.When Dickerson appeared in court yesterday the charges were read to him but he was not called on to enter a plea since they were filed indictably. The matter was transferred to the Point Fortin Magistrates Court for May 21.
