National atheltes, including Olympic shot put thrower Cleopatra Borel and sprinter Darrel Brown, as well as regional and international challengers, will line up today and tomorrow at the annual Hampton International Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain.Borel, who recently eased to gold at the Twilight Games, is a strong contender for another top-place finish at this event. Other local runners include Ria Thomas (200m) and Jessica James (800m). Brown will run in his specialised 100m.
Dozens of events with varying age divisions, from Under-10s to senior, will be competed. The opening ceremony is carded to start at 1 pm, today, and will be followed by the Boys Under-10 100m event. There will be medal presentations througout the competition. On day two, action will resume from 2.30 pm, and is expected to conclude before 7 pm. Some of the major attractions are the women and men's 200m international races, as well as the open 4x400m relays.Athletes from USA, Jamaica, Cuba, Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent, Suriname, Guyana, Montserrat will be in attendace. Cuba will provide the most foreign athletes, with several competing in a number of events. Janier Carraro, Reinier Mena, Arialis Gandulla and Deboach Odelin will all compete in both the 100m and 200m sprints. Jamaica's Riker Hylton and Akino Ming will both challenge the 400m, as will Ahmad Jamil Hubbard from the USA.
