Captain Jeremy Solozano found some form yesterday to lead the national Under-19 team to a 58-run win over arch rivals Barbados in round six of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional U-19 50-over tournament at the Everest Cricket Club in Guyana.
Left-handed Solozano, who has struggled throughout the competition top scored with 56 to lead T&T to a competitive 204/7. Solozano and opening partner Amir Jangoo got T&T off to a cautious start getting to 60/0 after 19 overs. Justin Joseph joined Solozano after Jangoo fell for 26 with the score on 66. Joseph, who has also found runs hard to come by settled down and with his captain put together a solid partnership.
When Solozano was dismissed a middle order collapse followed as T&T was reduced from 124/1 to 146/5 after 41.2 overs. A solid 44 from Camillo Carimbocas at the end of the innings led T&T to 204/7 at the close. Matthew Jones was the best bowler for Barbados taking 3/43. Shamar Springer (2/38) and Chad Williams (2/31) were also among the wickets grabbing two each.
The match was hanging in the balance with Barbados 99/2 after 30 overs in reply. However, a batting collapse followed and the Bajans were dismissed for 146 in 43.4 overs, giving T&T only its second win of the tournament. Nicholas Kirton and Akil Greenidge top scored for Barbados, scoring 45 and 43 respectively.
Fast bowler Akil Seetal was the pick of the T&T bowlers grabbing 3/36 in seven overs, while Tevon Jadoo (2/15) and Samuel Roopnarine (2/22) both ended with two wickets. With the win T&T remained in fifth place in the seven-team standings. The final round will be played today with the top two teams meeting in the final on Friday.
