Energy conservation is a global goal. This goal is mostly for the reduction of use of fossil fuels, the need to slow down climate change, save energy costs, etc. Any product that can save energy will be popular and such a product will create a billion-dollar industry.Such technology exists right here in T&T. It was invented by Dr Ronald DeFour at UWI a couple of years ago. While it was reported in the press, they did not tell about the economic benefits.
This technology is called BEMF Space Vector Resolver. It was created to improve brushless DC motors. It can operate with 40 per cent less energy, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the motor, etc.
The economic benefits: I am not sure if this product can be manufactured separately from the motor or if it has to be manufactured together with it. If it can be manufactured separately, then a factory producing this product will require several hundred workers.
If not, if it will require many factories to produce the many types of motors using many more hundreds of workers; factories to produce products that will use this these motors; factories to produce components for the these different products, creating a lots more jobs.
Think of products that run on batteries that have to be recharged: e-vehicles, handheld power tools, etc. They will be able to run longer and maybe be able to use smaller motors. We can also produce conversion kits for all kinds of vehicles including those used in mining and construction, trains, watercraft, aircraft that can use electric motors. These technologies can generate not only power but billions of dollars in foreign exchange.
This technology can create a new industry by itself. It will be a game-changer to diversify the economy.
