Second seeded pair Justin Siu and Rahul Rampersad advanced to last night's semifinal of the men's doubles segment of the T&T Badminton Association's (TTBA) National Senior Championships, where they were set to take on Derwin Renales and Alistair Espinoza.
Keston Friday and Kerwyn Pantin, the doubles favourites, had advanced to the same phase of the competition on Tuesday, after defeating Declan Monderoy and Johan Labastide 21-13, 21-16 in the quarterfinal, and were set for action in the other semifinal against Anil Seepaul and Milind Ogale. The two semifinal matches were scheduled for 7 pm, last evening.
The final will be played tomorrow at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena (CRISA), Chaguanas, the venue for both the senior and junior championships.
Past press time last evening, Pantin and Rampersad were locked in semifinal action of the men's singles, while Ramjass and Espinoza were also in action in the last-four stage. Thus far, Rampersad has produced the finest results from singles play having easily defeated both his quarterfinal and second-round opponents Sheraz Nabbie (21-6, 21-15) and Otis Fleary (21-11, 21-9), respectively. In the women's singles competition, Solangel Guzman, the reigning champion from Cuba, was up against Leanna Castanada last evening, while Rhea Khan and Jade Joseph were locked in the two semifinal fixtures.
The two mixed doubles semifinals were also played last night. Candice Lee Kim and Justin Siu were up against Khan and Quentin Thomas, while Ogale and Stephanie Mitchell played Guzman and Rampersad.
The two masters men's doubles semifinal was in action last evening. Group A round-robin winner Andre Lewis and Derek Singh played Group B runners-up Wayne Gomes and Peter Harris. Group B's unbeaten pair Wilson Reyes and Allan Young played Tony Ali and Reynolds John.
All finals will play tomorrow at the same venue.
