DirecTV W Connection secured the lone automatic Concacaf Champions League (CCL) spot from Group One of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) qualifiers on Tuesday night.
The local club, however, just managed to squeeze through ahead of fellow Digicel T&T Pro League club Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA, after playing to a 0-0 draw with Antigua Barracuda in their final round-robin match at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.
Going into the encounter, W Connection led the three-team table with three points from its 4-0 win over AIA, the reigning CFU Club Champions, which rebounded with a 3-1 whipping of Barracudas on Sunday to stay in the hunt.
Barracudas, meanwhile, were bottom of the pool without a point and needed a victory to have any chance of qualifying. But, despite putting up their best display of their two matches, the visitors, who campaign in the US Pro Division League, failed to get the much needed victory on Tuesday.
With the point earned, the Couva-based W Connection edged out Caledonia by a point to qualify for the main draw of the Concacaf Champions League for the second season in a row and third in team history (2009-10, 2012-13 and 2013-14) since the tournament was revamped eight years ago.
Caledonia still have a chance to move to the next phase though, as they will now meet the second-placed team from Group Two, former CFU Club winners Portmore United, in a home-and-away qualifying play-off to determine the third representative from the region for the CCL.
Valencia tops Group Two
Over in Kingston, Jamaica, Haitian club Valencia ended top of their four-team group following a 0-0 draw with host club Boys Town FC in the second match of a double-header at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
The point saw Valencia completing its three-match campaign with seven points, one more than Portmore, which thrashed Puerto Rico's Bayamon FC 5-0. Paul Wilson scored a second-half double to help Portmore take second spot, two points ahead of Boys Town.
