Di­recTV W Con­nec­tion se­cured the lone au­to­mat­ic Con­ca­caf Cham­pi­ons League (CCL) spot from Group One of the Caribbean Foot­ball Union (CFU) qual­i­fiers on Tues­day night.

The lo­cal club, how­ev­er, just man­aged to squeeze through ahead of fel­low Dig­i­cel T&T Pro League club Neal and Massy Cale­do­nia AIA, af­ter play­ing to a 0-0 draw with An­tigua Bar­racu­da in their fi­nal round-robin match at the Ato Boldon Sta­di­um, Cou­va.

Go­ing in­to the en­counter, W Con­nec­tion led the three-team ta­ble with three points from its 4-0 win over AIA, the reign­ing CFU Club Cham­pi­ons, which re­bound­ed with a 3-1 whip­ping of Bar­racu­d­as on Sun­day to stay in the hunt.

Bar­racu­d­as, mean­while, were bot­tom of the pool with­out a point and need­ed a vic­to­ry to have any chance of qual­i­fy­ing. But, de­spite putting up their best dis­play of their two match­es, the vis­i­tors, who cam­paign in the US Pro Di­vi­sion League, failed to get the much need­ed vic­to­ry on Tues­day.

With the point earned, the Cou­va-based W Con­nec­tion edged out Cale­do­nia by a point to qual­i­fy for the main draw of the Con­ca­caf Cham­pi­ons League for the sec­ond sea­son in a row and third in team his­to­ry (2009-10, 2012-13 and 2013-14) since the tour­na­ment was re­vamped eight years ago.

Cale­do­nia still have a chance to move to the next phase though, as they will now meet the sec­ond-placed team from Group Two, for­mer CFU Club win­ners Port­more Unit­ed, in a home-and-away qual­i­fy­ing play-off to de­ter­mine the third rep­re­sen­ta­tive from the re­gion for the CCL.

Va­len­cia tops Group Two

Over in Kingston, Ja­maica, Hait­ian club Va­len­cia end­ed top of their four-team group fol­low­ing a 0-0 draw with host club Boys Town FC in the sec­ond match of a dou­ble-head­er at the An­tho­ny Spauld­ing Sports Com­plex.

The point saw Va­len­cia com­plet­ing its three-match cam­paign with sev­en points, one more than Port­more, which thrashed Puer­to Ri­co's Baya­mon FC 5-0. Paul Wil­son scored a sec­ond-half dou­ble to help Port­more take sec­ond spot, two points ahead of Boys Town.
