The curator at the Emperor Valley Zoo is to probe circumstances around the escape of a chimpanzee from her enclosure this morning.

This morning at around 8:30 a.m, Sudi, the lone chimpanzee at the Emperor Valley Zoo, Port-of-Spain, escaped from her cage into the general zoo compound.

According to a release from the zoo, curator Nirmal Biptah immediately put into effect the standard operating procedures and Sudi was recaptured.

Sudi was not injured during the incident, the release said.

It further said, "At this time the Zoo was not yet open to the public, and all workers were alerted to her presence in the zoo."

"Sudi, who was hand-raised since birth in Canada and has been with the Zoo for over thirty years is habituated to human presence. She was able to maintain a very calm presence, exploring the surroundings in an inquisitive manner. She was closely monitored by her keepers during this time, who tried to coax her back into her enclosure," the release said.

"On standby was the Curator in a state of preparedness to sedate her once this became necessary. This took place following her climb on an overhanging tree into the area opposite the Zoo. To prevent any injury to the animal, she was sedated as she descended from the tree."
