T&T's Under-17 women's football team was handed a 8-0 thrashing by regional powerhouse USA in the opening match of the 2013 Concacaf U-17 Women's Championship, at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, on Thursday, and will enter today's match against Canada knowing its opponent would be playing to win and ultimately swell its goal difference.T&T faces Canada, from 3.30 pm local time. Canada and USA are the main contenders for the all-important first spot which will give the successful team a spot in the semifinals. Canada shares top spot with USA following another 8-0 thrashing on the same day, that over Guatemala.
Led by Marlon Charles, the T&T team already stands little chance of competing for the top spot. The team will play its final group match against Guatemala on Monday.Thursday's loss for the T&T team was a bitter one with the Americans outshooting the Soca Princesses 39 to none. Nicolette Craig, who started in goal for T&T made eight saves in front of a flat defense. USA earned a 3-0 half time lead, before scoring another five goals in the second half. Mallory Pugh scored a brace, while Anika Rodriguez, Marley Canales, Madison Haley, Civana Kuhlmann, Zoe Morse and Natalie Jacobs scored one goal each.With both the USA and Canada scoring eight, goal difference in the second round of Group B games will take on added importance as USA takes on Guatemala, while T&T plays Canada.
