Two days after returning from a trip to Canada, accountant Kyle Sooklalsingh met a horrific death when his BMW convertible crashed off the Solomon Hochoy Highway early yesterday.Sooklalsingh's convertible, registered PCH 41, was given to him five years ago as a birthday present from his father David, who owns Davane Import/Export Enterprises. Also injured in the crash was Sooklalsingh's gym instructor Brandon Williams, 36, of Caratal Road, Gasparillo.
Williams, who suffered massive head and internal injuries, remained hooked up to life support at the Intensive Care Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital up to late yesterday.Police said Sooklalsingh, 26, of Fahey Avenue, Gopaul Lands, Marabella, died on the spot.A witness, who requested anonymity, said around 3.10 am, Sooklalsingh and Williams were heading on the south-bound lane of the highway when upon passing the Corinth overpass, Sooklalsingh lost control of the car.
The car crashed through the highway railings, flew up into the air, smashed into a tree and kept spinning in the air, before landing in a crumpled heap inside a ditch."That car was travelling more than 200 miles an hour when it passed me at Freeport. Minutes later it crashed. I don't know if the driver fell asleep but he was really doing some numbers," the witness said.
Police spent more than an hour combing through the bushes in search of other passengers. No one else was found. Sooklalsingh's body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, for an autopsy. Two wreckers had to be used to pull the mangled vehicle from the ditch. At the family's home, Sooklalsingh's mother, Diane Hosein, was in a state of shock. She said she spoke to her son hours before the crash and he told her he was going to Williams' home to drop off some items.
"I am not sure where he was going afterwards. He did not come home and when my other son, Kyeil, got up to go to work, he noticed Kyle's car was not in the garage. He called Kyle's cellphone and someone answered saying he had an accident and was in the hospital," Hosein said. She said when David arrived on the accident scene, police had already moved Sooklalsingh's body from the wreckage.
"Everything is so sudden. I feel numb as if none of this is really true. I cannot believe that God will take away someone who was so kind and loving to us," Hosein said. She added Sooklalsingh was always willing to help his friends and had travelled to Canada to be with his friend who had undergone a medical operation."He loved to lime and have a good time. He came back from Toronto on Saturday. He studied accountancy in London and he had plans to becoming an actuary," Hosein said.
She explained that Sooklalsingh was the "baby" in the family. On his 21st birthday, David gave him the BMW as a present. Hosein said Sooklalsingh loved his siblings and worked in his father's business.Meanwhile, Williams' relatives stayed at the hospital praying for his life. Williams' friend, Hugh Findley, said too many people were taking chances on the road.Police officers of Ste Madeleine are continuing investigations.
