This season of Christmas will not be without its challenges, as there is a major effort to clean up the mess caused by the oil spills along the coastline of the south-western peninsula. While thousands of citizens are spending time relaxing with family and friends, dedicated environmentalists are busy saving helpless creatures that have been adversely affected by the spills.
There is a pending investigation to determine if the leaks were the result of sabotage, and if there is evidence that points to a wilful and deliberate act to poison our waters, then those responsible must be brought to justice. In the interim, the focus is on damage control and ensuring the rescue and protection of all living things that are at risk because of this disaster.
That this catastrophe has occurred at a time when the nation is in a festive mood, having celebrated Christmas and about to usher in the New Year, is particularly important if we ponder on the words of the Prime Minister in her Christmas message that "It is important for us to refocus, re-evaluate and to redirect our thoughts on the Christ Child and the message he embodied."The message referred to by the PM is one based on love, humility, and compassion.
Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult in the current state of affairs to find evidence of the qualities of faith, hope and charity when there is the wanton waste of state resources, unbearable arrogance of ministers and a despicable flaunting of luxurious possessions by those who, before holding office, would have been grateful for the discounted prices on rice, flour, oil and sugar.
