After a four-year hiatus top local triathlete Jason Gooding showed that he still has what it takes when he won the sprint distance in Suriname Triathlon event on Sunday. Gooding finished the course which comprised a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km in a time of 1:04.29. Gooding was fourth out of the pool but overtook two triathletes on the first lap of the four lap ride leg including fellow compatriot, James Amow, who placed third. Sixteen-year-old Amow, who was first out of the pool ahead of 35 other triathletes, crossed the line 1:06.14 less than two seconds behind second placed finisher, Lesley Carew of Suriname, who finished in 1:04.55. Gooding said he would be moving up to the Olympic Distance (twice the Sprint distance), for the Grenada Triathlon on May 5, which will also be the Caribbean Triathlon Union Championships. The third place finish for Amow is a good start to his 2012 season as he sets his eyes on the eight annual Rainbow Cup International Triathlon at Turtle Beach, Tobago on May 26. This event will also feature the inaugural Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships. For more information on the Rainbow Cup event, please visit www.rainbowtri.com.
