The 'UNC Soldiers' slate has called on UNC leader Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to intervene in the UNC's executive election campaign. Sunil Ramjitsingh, who heads the slate, wrote to Persad-Bissessar yesterday expressing disappointment with the handling of several aspects of the campaign.
Ramjitsingh said, "The election seems to be heading along a path of confusion and chaos or is shrouded in a level of secrecy and mystery, either of which are undermining by the minute, public confidence in the integrity of the election process, the members of the elections committee and the current NATEX (national executive) officers." Among concerns, the team stated, "Party members have no knowledge of the identities of all the candidates for the 17 positions up for election to date."
The team said it was never made clear under whose or what authority the recent decision to extend the nomination deadline was taken. It was also noted that special voting had been postponed to a date to be announced, there was no feedback to the team's initial concerns, and candidates have not been provided with the list of financial members to canvas. This was done in the January 2010 election, it was noted.
The team also said candidates have not been told where the polling stations are or how many of them there are. "The prevailing chaos due to the extension of the nomination deadline, demands the urgent intervention of the current NATEX," the team stated. Ramjitsingh said the situation has implications for the Government, since many of the current national executive officers are senior members of the Government.
