My thanks goes out to Khalid Hassanali, the new Petrotrin president, for the relief he has brought to the travelling public who use the Southern Main Road through Pointe-a-Pierre. Petrotrin started maintenance work at the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery in June last year, which required contract labour.
This brought about daily horrors for commuters who use this route, due to the indiscriminate parking on the grass verges and roadway by those workers. Traffic jams from 7 am turned a five-minute journey into almost an hour. The nearby mall was under siege as other workers parked their cars there. Legitimate mall users were inconvenienced as they were unable to find parking when trying to conduct business.
Letters to the newspapers and Petrotrin brought no response. However, as soon as Hassanali took over, parking became more organised and the daily traffic jam disappeared. I hope that Hassanali will now do all in his power to restore the grounds and grass verges around Pointe-a-Pierre to their former immaculate condition.
