Congress of the People (COP) political leader Prakash Ramadhar has confirmed the party's attendance at the People's Partnership rally in Chaguanas on Thursday. Addressing reporters after a "strategic meeting" with party members at San Salvador Estate in Gran Couva, Ramadhar said he had something special to say at the rally.
There has been mixed views from members including COP's chairman Joseph Toney about the Thursday's rally. Toney agreed with leader of the Movement for Social Justice David Abdulah that there were crucial issues to resolve and this was not the time to have a celebration.
Asked whether the COP supported the rally, Ramadhar said, "Some say it's a celebration, some say it is a reflection, some say it is marking the anniversary. We will be there because we are part of the People's Partnership government and we are there to give support for the things that are right and fix the things that are wrong."
Told that there seemed to be a difference in opinion amongst members, he said the COP was a very democratic party, but only himself and the chairman were authorised to speak on behalf of the party. He said it would rate the PP performance over the past year as fair to good, but there is a lot of improvement to be made.
"I rate it in a context if the things which we promise," he added. He made it clear the COP was "in for the long haul." Meanwhile, Sunday Guardian has learnt that several members of the executive are expected to boycott the event.
