Carifta boys Under-17 200m gold medallist Jonathan Farinha blazed to gold in the boys Under-18 200m in a personal best time of 21.19 seconds on the final day of action at the National Junior Track and Field championships at the Hasely Crawford stadium yesterday. The Abilene Wildcats sprinter overcame the 400m champion Machel Cedenio (21.28) as the pair dipped under the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championships standard of 21.80. Theon Lewis (Petrotrin PAP) took the bronze in 22.16 to add to silver in the 400m. The clash between the top two was one of the most anticipated of the two day meet. Farinha blasted out of the blocks and came into the home well ahead of the field. Cedenio made his trade mark late charge but the gap was too much for him to overcome. Farinha's win was more rewarding as he improved on his previous best of 21.28 he clocked in taking the Carifta gold in Bermuda. The QRC student topped the heats in 21.37 seconds. Speaking after the win, Farinha said he expected Cedenio to finish strongly. "I know he was a very strong runner so my plan was to get out hard in the first 175m and then let him catch me. I was glad that he was in the race so I could be pushed to World Junior standard."
Cedenio was going for double gold after he landed the 400m title on Saturday in a pb of 46.68 and said he assessed that he did not start fast enough. Jereem Richards was not denied his sprint double running away with the boys Under-20 200m in 21.01. The Quantum lad also got the CAC Junior (21.40) and World Junior standards (21.20) and was well off his pb of 20.82 set at the Quantum Classic on May 19. Richards ran a strong bend and pulled away to win. The 2012 World Indoor 4X400m bronze medallist crossed the line ahead Ayodelle Taffe (Petrotrin PAP) 21.43 and 100m champion Jonathan Holder (Concorde) 21.47. On Saturday Taffe clinched the 400m in pb of 46.79. Richards ended the meet on a high, anchoring Quantum to victory in the men's 4X400m in 3:18. Reubin Walters, Mark London, Kernesha Spann, Nicholas Landeau were double winners with qualifying performances. Walters (Memphis) took the boys Under-18 400m hurdles in 53.20 to add to the 110m hurdles title he snapped up on Saturday. He got under the CAC Junior standard of 54.00 and finished ahead of Dario Scantlebury (54.55), Jehvere Worrell (54.62) and Ramaro Thompson (55.39) all of Barbados. Carifta boys Under-20 champion London defended his two-lap title in style, stopping the clock in a personal best of 1:51.82, his third in his last three local meets. The Zenith athlete got under the CAC Junior mark of 1:54.00 and his previous pb of 1:51.99. He, however, missed the World junior mark of 1:51.00. On Saturday he defended his 1500m gold. Barbadians Jerrad Mason (1:53.42) and John Haynes (1:53.72) took the minor spots.
Spann (Neon Trackers) was first to the line in the girls Under-20 400m hurdles in 1:00:43, also getting under the CAC junior mark of 1:00.50. The 2010 Carifta champion also was faster than the World Junior qualifying time of 1:00.75. Former double Carifta winner Landeau ran away with the boys Under-18 800m in 1:58.17, just missing the CAC mark of 1:58.00. Brandon Benjamin, Jevon Joseph, Kayelle Clarke were double qualifiers. Benjamin (Memphis) soared to a big pb of 51.76 in the boys Under-20 400m hurdles improving on his previous best of 52.07 set at the President Classic last week. The 2011 Carifta silver medallist got Under–the CAC Junior (53.00) and World Junior (53.34) marks. Benjamin was second in the 400m flat in 47.31 (CAC Junior-47.50). Joseph (Air Bon Sonics) collected the boys Under-18 3000m in 9:11.76 (9:20.00). Clarke of Petrotrin PAP got revenge in the girls Under-18 200m winning in 24.41 to turn the tables on Aaliyah Telesford (Pt Fortin New Jets), the 100m winner. Telesford clocked 24.61. Carifta gold medallist Kenejah Williams turned the tables on Shervonne Worrell in the boys Under-18 shot put. Williams (Falcons) won in 17.00, ahead of Worrell (16.33) to avenge losing the discus to Worrell on Saturday. Both were over the 15.60 standard.
Keshorn Walcott was a comfortable winner in the boys Under-20 javelin. The Pan American Junior record holder (80.11) topped the field with toss of 69.65 getting over the 60.00 (CAC Junior) and 66.00 (World Junior) standards.
