Five days after being granted bail, Kezi Doughty, who had been jailed for willfully abandoning five of her nine children, remains behind bars, as no one has come forward to post bail on her behalf. On Monday, Doughty, 33, was granted $50,000 bail after her attorney Peter Taylor filed on her behalf.
However, in a statement yesterday, Taylor said he would have to apply for a variation of the bail, which was set by magistrate Alicia Chankar. Chankar sentenced Doughty to five months in prison for abandoning the five children at King's Wharf, San Fernando, last year. The children, who range in age from three to eight, were also made wards of the State.
Taylor said the conditions attached to the bail were too onerous for both Doughty and her relatives. He said this would mean that a bailor would have to get a clean deed (without encumbrance) in order to qualify for approval. He said many bailors are reluctant to "tie up" or encumber their deeds for such a small sum, since appeals tend to take some time before being heard.
