A fifth man appeared in court on Thursday, charged in connection with last month's attempted robbery at the Bank of Baroda in Port-of-Spain. Security guard Dexter Olbino, 38, of Eccles Trace, Warrenville, Cunupia, appeared along with Keston Jackie, Anton Smart, Chevallier Craig and Dexter Black.
Jackie, Smart, Craig and Black had previously been charged with 11 offences, including falsely imprisoning Olbino and robbing him of a bulletproof vest valued at $5,000. When the matter was recalled on Thursday before Magistrate Melvin Daniel in the Port-of-Spain Fourth Court, the charges were reread to the five accused who are now facing nine offences.
The charges are that on June 6 at the Bank of Baroda, Independence Square, Port-of-Spain, they assaulted senior manager Sandip Sinat with intent to rob him; robbed credit manager Ranjit Kumar of $1,600 in the commission of which they used personal violence; and unlawfully damaged a glass door, valued $3,000.
They are charged also with four counts of falsely imprisoning security guard Kyle Ambrose, Sinat, Kumar and manager Mahadeo Meena; and two counts of assault with intent to rob Meena and Ambrose. At the last hearing, Craig and Jackie were each granted $450,000 bail with a surety, while Smart and Black were remanded in custody because of their records.
Olbino was granted $350,000 bail and ordered to report to the Cunupia Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 6 am and 6 pm. Smart, of Upper Wharton Street, Laventille, was placed on $450,000 bail and ordered to report to the Besson Street Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 6 am and 6 pm. The matter has been adjourned to August 2.
