Former reporter Akile Simon and gardener Rodney Cave will reappear before a Tunapuna magistrate today to answer charges of having a firearm and ammunition in their possession. Simon, 29, and Cave, 28, appeared before Senior Magistrate Gail Gonzales in the Tunapuna First Court yesterday.
Simon is charged that on July 8, at an apartment at the corner of Meade and Henry streets, Tunapuna, he had a .38 firearm and 13 rounds of .38 ammunition in his possession. The charge against Cave read that on July 8, at the same place, he had five 12-gauge cartridges in his possession. Defence lawyer Keith Scotland who held for Simon's attorney, Farai Hove-Masaisai, requested an adjournment until today.
Scotland is expected to make a bail application on Simon's behalf today. Charged by PC Antonio Perreira of the Tunapuna Police Station, prosecutor Sgt Doodnath Ramnath objected to bail because of the seriousness of the offences. Simon and Cave were arrested on Sunday after officers, led by Sgt Basdeo Sinanan, executed a search warrant at the apartment and discovered the gun and ammunition.
Simon is also before the Arima court charged with three others for a series of offences arising out of an alleged robbery at the K&A Liquor Mart, Range Road, Arouca, on May 20. Simon was released on $250,000 bail on those charges and ordered to report to the police station nearest his home.
