Four drivers who were held in a breathalyser exercise in Sangre Grande last weekend were fined a total of $20,500 yesterday. Jason Grey, Dillon Siewchand, Kerry Phillip and Wendell Alcindor all pleaded guilty to the charge of drunk driving when they appeared before Magistrate Aden Stroude in the Sangre Grande Third Court. They were arrested by police during roadblocks which were co-ordinated by Superintendent Hendron Moses and ASP Neville Sankar last Friday and Sunday. They were ordered to pay fines, which ranged from $3,500 to $6,500. In default they will face up to 90 days in prison. According to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, a person found guilty of drunk driving is liable to a maximum fine of $8,000 or up to five years in prison.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Sankar said similar breathalyser exercises would be done every weekend in an attempt to curb the road-fatality toll. That figure stands at 103 for the year, according to statistics from the Highway Patrol and Traffic Branch.
The charges against the drivers were laid by PCs Vishwanath Sankar and Winston Boodram, of the Sangre Grande station.
