Government is expected to make an announcement at the conclusion of the Olympic Games in London, England, on what would be fitting rewards for T&T athletes said Minister of Communication Jamal Mohammed yesterday. He was speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet news conference at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair. Mohammed said Cabinet had preliminary discussions on the issue. He added: "At the end of Olympics we shall have a more substantial announcement. We are all very excited about the performance of the T&T representatives, of all the aspects of the Olympics this year. "They have been excellent representing our country. I am very proud of their achievements."
He added the Government would continue to look at the progress of the athletes as the Olympics wind down this weekend. He said: "We continue to monitor all of the athletes at the Olympic Games. We are indeed very delighted with the positive results we have been receiving from our athletes who are representing T&T. "We have one medal and we are still in a position to gain other medals before the Games comes to a conclusion over the weekend." He urged T&T to be supportive of the athletes. He said: "The best form of tributes you can pay to our athletes who are representing T&T is to make sure they are in a position to be on top of their game and at the peak of their capabilities for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero."We have to lend support, not only from the Government but from the people of T&T to rally behind these athletes." He reiterated that the Government was very proud of the T&T representatives. "We congratulate and salute them and we are very happy with the progress they have made in the Olympics so far," he said. Mohammed also acknowledged Usain Bolt's accomplishments, saying: "We have to congratulate Mr Usain Bolt. He is the first athlete from anywhere in the world to bring the 100 and 200 meters in successive Olympic Games. That is indeed a great achievement."
