There have been lots of criticism levelled at the policies and programmes put forward in the 2011/2012 budget. Most of the comments from the Opposition are negative, as would have been expected.
I believe that this budget will definitely kick-start the economy, which will be the beginning of a healthy annual growth rate. The most satisfying aspect, for me, of the polices and programmes advanced by Finance Minister Winston Dookeran is the granting of a $1,000 increase to all retired public servants and military personnel.
The arithmetic tells me that approximately 80,000 beneficiaries will now avail themselves of $8 million a month to raise their standard of living at least one notch. One can consider this as a mini-bailout. Demand for goods and services would increase which would lead to an increase in supply. The domino effect will come into play and the necessary kick-start will take place. This is elementary economics.
