Mc Leod brothers Joshua and Abraham joined four-time Olympian George Bovell III as qualifiers for next month's 11th FINA Short Course Swimming Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. This after they attained qualifying times at the Amateur Swimming Association of T&T Open Short Course Swim Meet which was hosted by Eagles Aquatics (at the St Michael's Swimming Pool, San Fernando on the weekend.
Coming back from recent injury, Joshua bested his 2010 time (52.86) in the 100m butterfly when he stopped the clock in 52.82 seconds and also shaved five one-hundredths of a second off his old time (23.51) in the 50m fly. He touched the wall in 23.46 seconds.
His younger sibling Abraham, swimming in his pet events, the 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke, erased seconds off both events to set new records.
In the 50m breaststroke, he convincingly showed his prowess as he stopped the clock at 27.45 down from 27.61 while in the 100m breaststroke, he set the bar at 1:00.40m cutting down the time by .34 seconds which he had swum only the month before.
On the second day of the event, Sean Clarke's 17-year-old record of 9:45.20 in the 800m freestyle was erased by Marlins' Christian Marsden (Boys 11-12) as he set the bar at 9:30.35 while teammate Joshua Romany (Open) clocked 8:46.26 to obliterate Clarke's 9:04.15 in the same event which had stood for fifteen years.
Jabari Baptiste, also of Marlins, displaced teammate Joshua Romany's 2010 record in the 200m freestyle (1:53.87) when he touched the wall in 1:53.23.
Joining the record-breaking fest was Torpedoes' Sharntelle Mc Lean who copped the first of her two record-breaking swims for this meet when she swam the 50m back in 29.71 displacing Kimberlee John Williams' 2010 record of 29.78.
The following day Sharntelle shaved one one-hundredths of a second off her own 2004 record in the 50m fly when she finished the race in 27.88 seconds.
