Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Dwayne Gibbs re­fused to re­spond to ques­tions by the me­dia con­cern­ing the ap­point­ment of Pro­fes­sor Ramesh De­osaran as chair­man of the Po­lice Ser­vice Com­mis­sion (PSC) and crime is­sues in Port-of-Spain. Gibbs and Deputy Com­mis­sion­er Jack Ewats­ki were guests at the first quar­ter­ly meet­ing held by the Down­town Own­ers and Mer­chants As­so­ci­a­tion (Do­ma) at Jaf­fa Restau­rant, Queen's Park Oval, Tra­garete Road, yes­ter­day. Af­ter the meet­ing, Gibbs tried to evade the me­dia. He said he could not speak and was on his way to an­oth­er en­gage­ment.

Gibbs said he had no com­ments about De­osaran's ap­point­ment on Wednes­day. How­ev­er, when pressed for com­ments that he would be un­der re­view for his ser­vice by the new chair­man at a meet­ing next week, Gibbs said: "Again at this point I have no com­ments to the me­dia as far as Mr Rame­sar's (De­osaran) new ap­point­ment." When told that Do­ma had made at­tempts to meet with him to dis­cuss crime in the city, Gibbs said: "Ac­tu­al­ly, I'm head­ing to a meet­ing right now, so that's where I'm go­ing. "So I'll have to ex­cuse my­self be­cause we'll be late for that meet­ing," he added. (RKR)
