Beautiful, enchanting, passionate, exotic. These are some words that describe the eclectic mix of women indigenous to the Caribbean, but they are just a few of the words that come to mind when referring to Sullivan Walker's new play Caribbean Woman. This Trinidad-born Hollywood actor has returned home to take the local acting industry by the reigns and help send our message to the world. A message which boldly states that, "We do exist! We are not just a rock in the ocean and there is no reason that the world should not know us by name!"
After making a name for himself abroad, Walker has returned home to make an impact by using his valuable experiences to our benefit. Truly a renaissance man, Walker, has outdone himself this time by writing, directing and producing this show almost single handedly. Inspired by the Broadway hit For Coloured Girls, Walker has put his pen to paper; which when combined with his deep, inherent love for his homeland resulted in a magnificent series of poems, short stories, skits and monologues that pay homage to our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.
This show has every element needed to create a night of pure entertainment. The writer has touched on a wide range of topics which will make you laugh and cry but most importantly provoke thought as his talented ensemble of actors take to the stage to reflect our essence as people of the Caribbean. But, do not be fooled by the name, this production is not just about the ladies but humanity as a whole. With subjects such as relationships, political issues, violence and love anyone can relate on an emotional level while laughing heartily at the delicious doses of unadulterated comedy. The cast of Caribbean Woman includes talents such as Desiree Boatswain, Johannah Walker, Carol Mark, Ari Geiser, Vanna Girod, Gina Parris, Sapphire Samuel, Aaliyah Johnson, Tameka Johnson, Khadija Glasgow, Rebecca Foster, Joel Gilbert, Dillon Jimenez, Natasha Simon, April Daniel, Nia-Kirelle Asson and Randy De Ganges.
