Twenty years after the July 1990 attempted overthrow of the Government, former Jamaat al Muslimeen insurrectionist Jamaal Shabazz still does not know where the guns used in the attack came from and how it entered the country.Pressed by lead counsel in the commission of enquiry into the attempted coup, Avory Sinanan, Shabazz, swearing by Almighty God, made the claim while giving evidence at the Caribbean Court of Justice, Port-of-Spain, yesterday."To this day I have not had any information regarding how it reached in the country," he said.
Shabazz said he was only a junior member of the Jamaat's wasir (leadership council) and dared not ask the organisation's then second in command, Hasan Anyabwile, anything about the weapons. He said: "Two days before the coup, I asked about weapons and they told me what type we were to use."I could not ask Hasan where it came from or where it was stashed. I would have gotten that look."Concerning actual plans for the coup d'etat, Shabazz said all he knew was the group of Muslimeen in charge of the Red House was supposed to move the politicians there to an undisclosed location. He said to this day he still questioned why that did not happen.
