The late police commissioner Hilton Guy went to the great beyond on Father's Day. His first cousin Carlton Guy eulogised him as "an authoritative person who was not afraid to challenge anyone," at Tranquillity Methodist Church, Tragarete Road, Port-of-Spain.Among those who mourned Guy were his wife Trixie and his sons Allan, Ian and Ryan. They were joined by Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs, former Port-of-Spain mayor, Murchison Brown and protective services personnel.Guy said: "Hilton was a very deliberate, confident and authoritative person who was not afraid to challenge anyone. Have you attempted to convince or sway him on any subject?"Whether religious issues, politics or life in general, I am certain you got nowhere."Based on these qualities, Guy thanked him for the discipline, encouragement and resilience he displayed at all times. He relished pork while nurturing a passion for plants, his orchard and sports.
In his homily, Canon Knolly Clarke said Guy must be remembered as a nation builder. Seizing the opportunity, he encouraged society to promote healthy family life.Quoting Chinua Achebe, Clarke said: "When the family becomes dysfunctional, Things Fall Apart...the centre cannot hold. We must begin to face the critical situation and make changes."Gibbs paid tribute to Guy for his warmth,"It was like chatting with an old friend. Even in his illness, he never talked about things he was going through...just the good old days."Gibbs remarked he was a patriot whose passion was about "what he could do to help T&T." He will be interned in his native Tobago.Rennie Placide sang a pore raising You Raise Me Up and the congregation sang What A Friend We Have In Jesus lustily.
