Homicide detectives had a busy weekend probing the murders of two men within a seven-hour period in Point Fortin and Santa Flora. The slain men were identified as Rae Atherly, of Point Fortin and 42-year-old Ian King, of Tunapuna. Up to late yesterday police had not made arrests in either of the killings. Police reports stated that around 6 pm on Friday the decomposing body of Atherly was found in his house at Southern Gardens, off Warden Road. He lived alone.
Police said his body bore chop wounds to the head and impressions left on his neck suggested that he may have been strangled with something. Investigators believe it could have been a piece of wire. He was last seen alive on Tuesday. Meanwhile, during the early hours of yesterday morning, residents of Agipeta Avenue, Santa Flora were awaken by loud explosions. When the officers arrived around 1 am, they found King's bullet-riddled body on the side of the road. Investigators said King was originally from Tunapuna, but was staying in Santa Flora. Police said they had received information which suggests that he was hiding in Santa Flora after receiving death threats. Investigations are continuing.
