Second seeds in the men's and women's singles,Vaughn Wilson and Lee Ann Lingo each won their quarterfinal matches comfortably after rain delayed play on the fourth day of the national tennis championships at the Trinidad Country Club in Maraval yesterday evening. In the only two matches to be completed by press time, Wilson beat Joshua Abraham 6-1, 6-1 while Lingo eased by Keshia Lewis 6-1, 6-2.
Tournament director Sterling Adams said that although only two of the four courts were dry enough to use, play would continue into the night with the hopes of the remaining six matches being completed.
Number one Yohansey Williams was set to face Jovani Lewis for a spot in the semis while fourth seed Richard Chung was to meet Ty Abraham.
In other tennis news, Breana Stampfli beat Jamaican Shantal Blackwood to advance to the Girls Under 18 Singles second round in the ITF Jamaica Junior Tournament in Kingston yesterday. She will face the number one seed, USA's Blair Shankle, in today action. Shankle boasts a world junior ranking of 179 while Stampfli is 932nd.
